How to Stand Out in a Job Interview (Without Sounding Like a Robot)

Interviews Are Not Exams—Stop Memorising Answers

If you’re answering interview questions like you’re reading a script, stop. Nobody wants to hire a robot (unless it’s an AI job, in which case… awkward).

Here’s how to stand out without sounding like an NPC in a job simulator.

1: Ditch the Overused Buzzwords

If you say, “I’m a hardworking, detail-oriented team player,” the recruiter will fall asleep mid-interview.

✔️ DO: Give real examples of how you solve problems.

DON’T: Speak in clichés.

Example: Instead of “I’m good under pressure,” try “At my last job, I handled a last-minute project with zero stress and still met the deadline.”

2: Actually Answer the Question (Without Rambling)

Interviews aren’t TED Talks. If your answer is longer than a Netflix intro, trim it down.

✔️ DO: Keep it clear, concise, and relevant.

DON’T: Go on a 5-minute tangent about your childhood dog.

Example: Interviewer: “Tell me about a challenge you faced" instead of “Well, back in 2015, I had this coworker who never refilled the coffee pot…” try “In my last role, we lost a major client unexpectedly. I analysed why, improved our retention strategy, and we increased client renewals by 25%.

Short. Sharp. Memorable.

3: Show You Did Your Homework (Without Sounding Like a Stalker)

Saying “I love your company” isn’t enough. Show them why.

✔️ DO: Mention something specific about the company’s work, culture, or values.

DON’T: Recite their entire “About Us” page back to them.

Example: Instead of “I love your company,” say: “I saw your recent campaign on [something relevant]—the creativity behind it really stood out. I’d love to bring that kind of innovation to your team.

Boom. Now you sound like someone who belongs there.

4: Speak Like a Human, Not a Corporate Jargon Generator

If your answer sounds like a LinkedIn post gone wrong, rethink it.

✔️ DO: Be professional but natural.

DON’T: Use robotic phrases like “leveraging synergy to optimize cross-functional collaboration.”

Example: Instead of “I proactively execute strategic initiatives to drive engagement,” say: “I come up with creative ways to get people interested—and it works.

Less buzzwords, more YOU.

5: Flip the Script—Ask Killer Questions

Newsflash: The best interviews feel like conversations, not interrogations.

✔️ DO: Ask thoughtful questions that show you’re serious about the role.

DON’T: Only ask about salary or say “No, I think you covered everything.”

Example Questions to Steal:

“What does success look like in this role after six months?"

“What’s something your top employees all have in common?”

“What’s one challenge your team is facing that I could help solve?”

Asking smart questions = instant credibility.
